Hello
I’m Perine, the person behind Suikerbekkie.
I’ve always loved creating things that feel thoughtful, coordinated, and a little nostalgic. Whether it’s a dessert table, a gift, or a styled setup, my goal is simple — to make it beautiful without losing its warmth or authenticity.
My Story
About Me
For more than twenty-three years, I’ve planned events, coordinated brand activations, and created experiences that celebrate detail and design. Over the years, I’ve learned that true excellence only happens when you work with heart and intention. Good design comes from balance, scale, and harmony — the quiet alignment of elements that make something feel right.
Where I Come From
I grew up in South Africa, where gatherings are warm, generous, and filled with food that brings people together. South African women have a natural instinct for coordination — every element must work in harmony, from colours to conversation. We pay attention to the small details because they matter. And we never forget the importance of humor; a touch of laughter always belongs at the table. After moving to Belgium, I wanted to bring a little of that warmth and generosity into the more quiet, reserved rhythm of Belgian life — blending both worlds into something that feels genuine and beautifully balanced.
Experience and Teaching
Before starting Suikerbekkie, I ran Balloon Design Academy in South Africa, which offered both creative décor services for private and corporate events and professional training in balloon design and event styling. I used balloon décor as a powerful marketing medium, helping brands and clients stand out through thoughtful design and presentation. I was always amazed at how effective design could transform the atmosphere of a bland or lifeless space into something full of energy, warmth, and emotion. Through my training academy, I found great joy in guiding others to express their creativity and boost their confidence. I particularly loved the teaching aspect and would be eager to offer small, hands-on workshops again for anyone interested in creative styling and thoughtful design.
My Inspiration
I find inspiration everywhere, but nature has always been my greatest teacher. It offers the best colour palettes, effortless textures, and endless balance. I also draw ideas from art, poetry, and the quiet details of everyday life. A phrase, a photograph, or even a passing moment can spark an idea. Inspiration is everywhere if you pay attention — and I love weaving those small impressions into something beautiful and real.
My Philosophy
I believe in small batches, real ingredients, and thoughtful details. Every box, ribbon, and bite is selected or made with intention — or at least that’s what I strive for. My children have grown up hearing my mantra so often they can probably recite it in their sleep: If you do something, do it well or leave it… and leaving it is not an option, so you’d better do it well. That mindset guides me, even if things sometimes get a little chaotic along the way. Suikerbekkie isn’t about perfection or mass production. It’s about care, quality, and meaning.
When it comes to gifting, I believe it should never be about what feels convenient to the giver. It’s about thoughtfulness — taking the time to notice what will truly make the receiver happy. Real gifting starts with listening and paying attention. That’s where meaning lives.
What You Can Expect
When you order from Suikerbekkie, you get more than something pretty to unwrap. You get a piece of genuine care — thoughtful design, honest ingredients, and attention to detail that comes from years of doing what I love. Every order is handled personally, from our first message to the final ribbon.
I believe communication should be clear, timelines should be respected, and every client should feel that their request matters. Things don’t always go perfectly — life and ovens both have their moods — but I approach every project with intention and a desire to make it right.
Whether it’s a custom box, a styled table, or a small celebration, you can expect honesty, care, and something made with real heart. That’s the promise behind Suikerbekkie.
Where the name Suikerbekkie comes from
In Afrikaans, Suikerbekkie means “little sugar bird” — a small, colourful bird often seen flitting between the bright proteas and wildflowers of the Cape. It lives off sweetness, drawn instinctively to beauty and colour. The word is also used as a term of endearment, much like “sweetheart.” And taken literally, it suggests having a mouth full of sugar — which feels perfectly fitting for what I do.
The name felt right because it carries all the things I love: colour, warmth, generosity, and a touch of sweetness. Many Belgians have a fondness for the sound and feeling of Afrikaans, and even if they don’t know the exact meaning, Suikerbekkie tends to make people smile. It connects my South African roots with my life here in Belgium — a small, sweet meeting point between two homes.
